The design of the new school was a collaborative effort which focused on salvaging the existing gymnasium on the site. The school serves as one of the main gathering points for the community, and the gymnasium located on this site was regulation size for high school sports and just the right size for community gatherings. The coal mining history of the town is incorporated into the design of the building through the use of raw, industrial materials and a mine-inspired entryway. A history wall is located inside the entryway displaying photos and artifacts of Hanna’s past.

Program elements include K-6 grade classrooms, special education, S.T.E.A.M (Science Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), a multipurpose classroom, gymnasium, warming kitchen, cafeteria, library, speech and a multipurpose room.
